In terms of the practical aspect, the port of Barcelona is amongst the largest ports in the Catalonia area, making it of huge importance for incoming and outgoing freight, a responsibility it
has managed for approximately 2000 years. Indeed, there are few ports in the whole of Europe which turnover more freight than this.As well as freight, the port also has a busy passenger terminal which is popular with incoming cruise ships whose passengers relish the close proximity to the city centre, with the travel time being less than half an hour meaning that visitors to the area can enjoy a full day in the city before their ship departs. With regards to outgoing ships and ferries, there are regular trips by ferry to the Balearic Islands as well as to other destinations.
Aside from its primary purpose as being a port for ships, boats and ferries, the port also has a thriving commercial section which is home to a large shopping mall, a multi screen cinema and various night clubs and bars which are highly popular with the younger crowd in the area who enjoy a change from the inner city venues. Another major attraction at the port is the aquarium which is absolutely huge and is home to a vast range of fascinating species.
